Pregnancy is a natural biological process that occurs when a fertilised egg implants in the uterus. It typically lasts about 40 weeks, divided into three trimesters. During pregnancy, a woman's body undergoes significant changes to support the growing foetus. These changes can cause various pregnancy symptoms, some of which appear early in pregnancy. Sometimes the pregnant person may be carrying more than one fetus.
Pregnancy can be diagnosed through home pregnancy tests that detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. For confirmation, a healthcare provider may perform a blood test or ultrasound. Blood tests can detect hCG earlier than urine tests, while ultrasounds can visualise the developing foetus. Pregnancy ultrasound scans can be performed as early as 6 weeks. However, we recommend to have your scan at 6 weeks as there is more of a chance of seeing the heartbeat.
Pregnancy is not a condition that requires treatment, but rather a natural process that needs monitoring and support. Regular prenatal check-ups are essential to ensure the health of both mother and baby. Healthcare providers may recommend prenatal vitamins, dietary changes, and lifestyle adjustments to support a healthy pregnancy. They'll also monitor for any complications and provide necessary interventions if needed.
Although, pregnancy can be emotionally challenging. Healthcare providers offer support for mental well-being. They address concerns and provide resources for stress management and emotional health. This support continues after the baby is born. Postnatal care is crucial for the recovery of the mother and the health of the newborn. Healthcare providers offer guidance on breastfeeding, newborn care, and postnatal health checks.
Pregnancy can significantly impact a woman's life, affecting physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, and daily routines. It often requires lifestyle changes and preparation for parenthood. Risk factors for pregnancy complications include advanced maternal age, pre-existing medical conditions, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and certain medications. Multiple pregnancies and a history of pregnancy complications can also increase risks.
Complications can also affect the baby's health, not just the mother. Monitoring pregnancy means safeguarding the health of two or more lives.
We provide a comprehensive range of services, from private GP consultations and specialised men's and women's health care to advanced ultrasound scans and proactive health screenings, all within a reassuring and state-of-the-art environment.
You have a question about Pregnancy? We have an answer.
Some sensitive tests can detect pregnancy before your period is due. For best accuracy, wait until the first day of a missed period. Test a week after missing your period for the clearest result.Tests measure hCG, present only during pregnancy. It appears after implantation, about 10 days post-conception. HCG becomes detectable 7–10 days after implantation. If your cycles are irregular, test 21 days after unprotected intercourse.
Pregnancy tests detect hCG in your urine, a hormone produced after a fertilised egg attaches to your uterus. The hormone's levels double every two to three days in early pregnancy, making tests highly effective. Home tests offer privacy and quick results, while blood tests at your doctor's can confirm pregnancy earlier and more accurately.
Over-the-counter tests use various methods to detect hCG in urine. Home pregnancy tests are nearly 99% accurate when used correctly. Results appear within minutes as a colour change, line, symbol, or text. Negative results may not be definitive if taken too soon.If symptoms persist or your period doesn't start, retest in a week. Consult your GP for continuous negative results without menstruation. Some pharmacies and GPs provide free or low-cost tests.
Yes, ultrasound scans are generally considered safe for both the patient and the unborn baby (in the case of pregnancy scans). Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use ionising radiation, which can potentially harm living tissues. There are no known side effects or risks associated with ultrasound scans when performed by qualified healthcare professionals. However, it is essential to ensure that the scan is medically necessary and performed by a trained specialist.
Moderate exercise is generally safe during pregnancy. Consult your healthcare provider for personalised advice on suitable activities and intensity.
At Spital Clinic, in partnership with the London Pregnancy Clinic, we offer comprehensive pregnancy care with a focus on early anomaly detection and thorough fetal screenings at every stage of your pregnancy. Our expert team uses the latest 2D, 3D, and 4D imaging technologies to ensure the best possible care for you and your baby.
Viability/Dating Scan (Weeks 6-9) - £140
Begin your pregnancy journey with our Viability Scan, also known as the Dating Scan. This is your first step in confirming your pregnancy and setting the foundation for accurate follow-up care. If you're planning to have Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), this scan helps establish proper dating and assess the number of babies.
10-Week Scan (Weeks 10-11) - £260
At 10 weeks, we offer the most advanced anomaly scan available, designed to detect up to 10 severe fetal anomalies. This is also the optimal time to utilize 3D technology for an early, detailed check-up of your baby’s health, ideally paired with NIPT.
Early Fetal Scan (Weeks 12-16) - £260
Our signature Early Fetal Scan includes a comprehensive examination of your baby to exclude over 100 serious anomalies, typically screened by the NHS at 19-20 weeks. This early scan allows us to detect issues much sooner, giving you peace of mind.
Anomaly Scan (Weeks 20-25) - £260
Our detailed Anomaly Scan goes beyond the standard NHS 19-20 week checks, providing a thorough examination of your baby's face, brain, heart, and other vital organs. We recommend performing this scan between 22-23 weeks for the best results. Additional checks, like uterine artery dopplers and cervical length measurements, can be included upon request.
3rd Trimester Anomaly Scan (Weeks 26-29) - £260
Unlike the NHS, which doesn’t offer routine scans after the 20-week anomaly scan, we provide a 3rd Trimester Anomaly Scan. This scan screens for late-manifesting birth defects, focusing on the brain, heart, and kidneys, using advanced 3D/4D technology.
Wellbeing Scan (Weeks 30-35) - £260
Our Wellbeing Scan at this stage ensures that your baby is growing normally and checks for any late-developing issues. This scan includes fetal growth and weight assessment, blood flow studies, and a detailed look at the placenta and amniotic fluid, with 3D/4D imaging if possible.
Presentation Scan (Weeks 36-40) - £260
As you near delivery, our Presentation Scan checks your baby’s position, detects breech presentation or other abnormalities, and ensures your baby’s growth and wellbeing with doppler studies of the umbilical and cerebral arteries.
On-Demand Scans (Weeks 6-40) - £260
At any stage of your pregnancy, our fetal medicine consultants can offer a same-day diagnostic second opinion and reassurance scan. If you have any concerns or require additional examinations, our team is here to provide thorough care and peace of mind.
Specialised Early Fetal Echocardiography (Weeks 12-18) - £260
From 12 weeks, our specialized Early Fetal Echocardiography can detect up to 80% of severe fetal heart defects. This scan is especially recommended if your baby has increased nuchal translucency (NT) or other unusual findings in the first trimester.
At Spital Clinic, in collaboration with London Pregnancy Clinic, we believe that every pregnancy scan should be meticulous and comprehensive. Our goal is to ensure your baby’s health and your peace of mind throughout your pregnancy journey. We are early pregnancy scan specialists in London.
